Why psychotherapy?

Some people contact a counsellor or psychotherapist because they are facing a crisis, whilst some may be getting on with their lives but feel stuck, or troubled by something known or unknown about themselves. Perhaps there is a sense of unease, which can’t be put into words, or a pattern of behaviour or a repeated difficulty in relationships.

The things that trouble us may seem to be arbitrary, but they often have a meaning that relates to the our unique experience. Through talking to a psychoanalyst or counsellor we are able to uncover this meaning and our symptoms lessen and fall away. Most of us encounter difficulties at some time in our lives. Often we find a way to work through them, but sometimes they can return or overwhelm us.

My approach

I work in a psychoanalytic tradition that thinks of our choices and actions as being caused by unconscious processes as well as conscious ones. I work on the principle of unpacking the unconscious strands that run through our lives. Through speaking with a psychotherapist we can gradually bring to light the conflicts and fears that underlie our suffering.

This can be an emotional experience, but also an inspiring and stimulating one, which can enable us to discover new ways through our difficulties. Then we can find what works best for us and become more confident and more grounded in the choices we make in life.

The difference between this way of working and some other therapies, such as Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) is that where CBT seeks to remove problems without addressing the underlying causes, I would be helping you to look for solutions by addressing the deeper issues. One benefit of this is that it becomes far less likely that new difficulties will replace the old.

What can psychotherapy help with?

Some of the difficulties psychotherapy can help with: depression | anxiety | loss and bereavement | sense of hopelessness or worthlessness | loss of direction in life | relationship and family problems or breakdown | panic attacks | self-harm | suicidal thoughts | PTSD | paranoia | hearing voices | flashbacks | trauma | sexual abuse | sexual assault | disordered eating | phobias | retired or thinking about retirement | post-natal depression | lack of confidence | the ageing process | making poor decisions or unable to decide | obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD) | difficulties with alcohol or drugs | issues around parenting | borderline personality disorder (BPD) | bi-polar disorder and more…

My experience

I have undergone a four year post-graduate level training in psychoanalytic psychotherapy registered with the United Kingdom Council for Psychotherapy (UKCP). I have been practicing for over a decade as a psychoanalytical psychotherapist in Cornwall and prior to that I worked in special needs education in London, and in the visual arts.
I have a wide clinical experience with individuals and couples, ranging from depression and anxiety to psychosis, schizophrenia and Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD).
I'm a registered member of Cornwall’s only UKCP accredited psychoanalytical training organisation, The Society for Social and Critical Psychoanalysis (SSCP), where I contribute to the teaching of psychoanalysts, as well as providing clinical supervision, and helping to oversee the SSCP low cost clinic.

How to find me

My Cornwall psychotherapy practice is located in a quiet and private room in my home in Truro, a 3 minute walk from Truro train station, and 10 minutes from the city centre.

My standard fee for psychotherapy is £60 and sessions run for 50 minutes, typically once a week and sometimes more. I hold some therapy places open for those who need to pay less. For couples psychotherapy in Truro the fee is £80 and sessions run for an hour.

Fees and times can be discussed at the initial meeting along with other practicalities, and there is always room for questions and concerns about what to expect from psychoanalysis.
